The Dream Big Folio: Houdini’s Illusion That Inspired David Copperfield [Backordered until Dec. 1, 2025]
Step into the moment that redefined what humans believe is possible.
Dream Big Folio – Houdini’s Illusion That Inspired David Copperfield brings you inside the legendary 1918 Vanishing Elephant performance at the New York Hippodrome—an act so audacious it later inspired a young David Copperfield to imagine making the moon disappear.
This folio is built around one extraordinary centerpiece: a replica of Houdini’s original letter to Harry Kellar, preserved exclusively in David Copperfield’s International Museum and Library of the Conjuring Arts, the world’s largest private collection of magic memorabilia. Kellar, widely known as the “Dean of American Magicians,” was the most celebrated magician in the United States before Houdini and one of Houdini’s early heroes and mentors. The original letter resides only in Copperfield’s museum.
Everything in the folio is designed to give you the same spark Copperfield describes in his letter—the spark that later helped fuel some of the most iconic illusions in modern history.
1. Houdini’s Letter to Harry Kellar (Replica)
Typed three days after the Vanishing Elephant debuted, this letter captures Houdini’s unfiltered excitement—his pride, his theatrical flair, and the thrill of pulling off something the world had never seen.
Replica produced with permission from David Copperfield’s private museum.
2. The Vanishing Elephant Photograph
The iconic image of Houdini standing beside Jennie, the 8,000-pound elephant he made vanish. This is the same photograph that stopped a young Copperfield in his tracks and showed him that imagination has no ceiling.
3. The Historical Context Document
A richly researched narrative exploring Houdini’s relationship with Kellar, the origins and execution of the Vanishing Elephant illusion, and why it became one of magic’s most enduring mysteries.
4. A Letter from David Copperfield: An Invitation to Dream Big
Copperfield shares how this photograph shaped his childhood, why Houdini remains a beacon of human possibility, and how wonder can redirect a life. His message is personal, hopeful, and unmistakably powerful:
every breakthrough begins with a dream others think is impossible.
5. “Make the Moon Disappear Yourself” Illusion Card
A simple yet astonishing optical illusion connected to Copperfield’s own lifelong dream—a playful gateway into the imagination that fueled his career and the global illusion he’s preparing to unveil.
This collection isn’t just history—it’s a baton passed from dreamer to dreamer.
From Houdini’s boldness,
to the photograph that lit Copperfield’s imagination,
to the replicas and messages you now hold,
this folio is an invitation to rediscover your own sense of wonder.
It reminds us that limits are often illusions…
and that the next great idea begins with someone willing to think bigger than the moment they’re in.
